While we wish things were different, the current pandemic continues to impact all of us and what would have been an in-person event here in Lincoln. We take the health and safety of our participants and volunteers seriously, so we made the decision to hold Take Down Tobacco National Day of Action, formally Kick Butts Day, virtually this year. Even though we will not be together in-person, there is so much we can accomplish as a group across Nebraska. This year we will give you all the tools to learn about tobacco-related issues and educate and empower your senator and other community members to make lasting changes. There is nothing that can silence us!
Big Tobacco has a long history of marketing its deadly products to youth through manipulation and deception, and we’ve seen it all and had enough of it! As youth, you have the power to change the social norm created by Big Tobacco and celebrate our collaborative achievements. Awareness and unification are keys to our success in the past and moving forward. Take Down Tobacco Day gives you the opportunity to share how you feel about this with your representatives, as well as make a statement. Learn how to educate and empower Nebraska youth and state senators. Both individuals and groups are welcome to register.
Why did we move our event to April Fools’ Day? The tobacco industry peddles products that addict, sicken and kill. So how do they get people to use products like that? They have to fool them. They use youth-oriented marketing to make it seem cool, brightly-colored packaging to make it seem fun, and sweet flavors to make it seem harmless– all to hook another generation. Now, they’re trying to position themselves as “responsible” and “reformed,” as they vigorously fight efforts to reduce tobacco use. They’ve even taken advantage of COVID-19 to push their products!
