Shout-Out

Every so often the No Limits Youth Board features an individual aged 12—18 or a group that has gone above and beyond the call of duty to take on Big Tobacco! These teens are in their school paper and local media for kicking the tobacco industry’s butts (cigarette!!!) out of their school and community.

Great Job, YOADA!

The No Limits group YOADA has done an awesome job celebrating Kick Butts Day with “Road Signs,” T-shirts, and a “Hall of Shame” at Broken Bow High School. The group took its message a step further and did an on-air interview with a local radio station. Definitely Shout-Out worthy!

YOADA

YOADA group members include Patrick Wright, Mikensie Wright, R. Kyle Mayor, and Katie Day along with their group sponsor, Deb Mayor.

Great Job, Teal!

Group: Trust No Tobacco

Teal Timperley, a freshman at Lynch Public School, did a fantastic job helping out with her group’s Project 1200 activism. Not only did the group have an awesome display of 1200 books, but Teal helped by making some of the chart displays explaining their activism and creating her own “What’s in a Cigarette” display. Teal was nominated by her group sponsor/teacher, Wanda DeKay.

Good Work, Melanie, Stacey, and Natasha!

Melanie Bruha (Burwell), Stacey Mueller (Crofton), and Natasha Doty (Lincoln) traveled with No Limits to New York City to take part in the Philip Morris International (PMI) Shareholders Protest. They worked with nearly fifty other youth from statewide, youth-led movements just like No Limits to rally outside of PMI and to have their voices heard. They did a fabulous job while taking part in an opportunity few will ever experience. Melanie, Stacey, and Natasha were nominated by Amanda Mortensen.

Nice work, GLW Youth Advisory Board!

Burwell

Members: Garret Drudik, Riley Sheets, Zane Aldrich, and Mark Dearmont
Group Sponsor: Marcie Smith

GLW, you are keen problem solvers! The group had planned to put labels on popcorn bags during the Calamus Court Challenge during the end of March, but when they found out that the concession stand was no longer going to sell popcorn, they found an even better way to get their message out. GLW attached their labels to all of the programs being distributed at the event. Not only did those attending the event see the labels, but the group also got media coverage in the Burwell Tribune! Awesome job, GLW!

March 2009

Way to go, Erica!

Lincoln

Erica did an outstanding job organizing a human billboards event in Lincoln for the 2009 Kick Butts Day. She recruited other youth board members, Natasha Doty, Alena Hejl and Lisa Brune to take part in celebrating Nebraska going smoke-free June 1, 2009.

Great Job, Monika!

McCool Junction

Not only did Monika celebrate Kick Butts Day 2009 by organizing a gathering at her church, but also has worked hard in recruiting new No Limits members.

February 2009

Way to go, DtL!

O’Neill

Members of the No Limits group DtL did an awesome job in January of airing out Big Tobacco’s Dirty Laundry. They displayed clothes with facts written on them at O’Neill High School to get the word out about some of the things Big Tobacco would prefer you not know.

DtL group members include: Toni Hamik, Megan Peter, Lindsey Applebey, Shelby Skopec, Addie Schneider, Alex Atkins, and Miranda Winter along with group sponsors Amy Shane and Allen Spangler.

Good Job, Mercedes!

Lincoln

Mercedes Printz of Lincoln has recently done a great job with local tobacco compliance checks. She has helped with a total of five compliance checks and is always enthusiastic and ready to help inform others about compliance checks. She has also helped recruit her friends and families to help and learn more about what can be done around Lincoln.

January 2009

Great Job, Brandon!

Brandon has stepped up to help make a difference at Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo these past few months. Clipboard in hand, Brandon worked diligently to collect over 100 signatures in just two hours to petition for the zoo to go completely smoke-free. Thanks, Brandon, for all of your hard work and efforts to make a difference against Big Tobacco.

The April Shout-Out goes to Crofton WAT & Maxwell’s FCCLA:

Holla’ at the Crofton Warriors Against Tobacco!

No Limits wants to send a huge shout-out to the youth activists in Crofton! These youth caught the media’s attention with an unforgettable Project 1200. Crofton WAT sent a message loud and clear. Big Tobacco kills 1200 people each day in the United States! Keep up the good work, Crofton!

Check out some media coverage:

KTIV-TV, Sioux City, IA
KMEG-TV, Sioux City, IA
Yankton Daily Press & Dakotan, Yankton, SD
Norfold Daily News, Norfolk, NE

Maxwell Rocks!

It’s time to give some props to Maxwell’s FCCLA members for hitting the streets, literally, with their message. The whole seventh-grade class lined up on Highway 30 in costumes covered with anti-tobacco industry messages. Awesome job reaching out to the public—even the coal trains got your message loud and clear.
